Ben Barnes took on the role of Billy Russo/Jigsaw in Netflix’s adaptation of Marvel’s The Punisher, and he was awesome.
Ben Barnes has long ago proven that he’s got the flippin chops if you know what I mean. He’s just a great actor. But goodness gracious, he was a total freak as Billy Russo in The Punisher. He was amazing! And I’d like to scribble about if for a minute if that’s cool — dude, Ben, if you’re listening, hats off to you, sir.
(This is the part where I prove that I know what I’m talking about. Little man syndrome? Maybe. But I know my 💩 okay? daggummit.)
I’m an entertainment writer. No, not just on here, on several platforms. It’s what I do. So I watch a lot of movies and shows. And what I saw in Ben Barnes’ performance was pure gold. He just nailed the role on all cylinders.
In season 1, he was put-together — a greedy psychopath, but tame and calculated. His performance was perfect. If he had stopped there, it would have already been impressive. But as we know, his transformation into Jigsaw would take the acting challenge to the next level.
But he didn’t flinch.
He took on the transformation head on and became possibly the most dynamic antagonist to ever hit the screen: volatile, fragile, strong, ill, mentally handicapped, obsessive, and all of those characteristics capped off with the same natural leadership ability that marked his season 1 performance.
How? I have no idea how he or anyone could pull that off. I just know that he belongs in the conversation with the greatest on-screen villains of all time, such as Andrew Scott as Moriarty and Heath Ledger as The Joker. Yes, Ben Barnes was that good.
I can’t even begin to imagine (get ready for the pun) the Jigsaw puzzle Barnes was faced with when trying to put that character together. Someone like that can so easily come off as a joke if the acting is even a smidge bit off.
But he did it.
Hopefully, he will be able to resume his talents in some form or fashion as a part of the Marvel franchise in the future. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s rooting for it.
